Apprenticeship growth journey with Thomas Hyland

Thomas Hyland began his career as an electrical apprentice at ECIA member Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick. The decision he made 15 years ago set the stage for significant personal and professional growth. His apprenticeship provided a solid technical foundation and shaped his work ethic. Working at Sellafield, the nuclear decommissioning site in Cumbria, connected Thomas with the local community and diverse on-site teams, fostering both insight and empathy.

When it came to choosing his future, Thomas recognized that he wasn’t the most academically inclined and thrived in a hands-on learning environment, leading him to pursue an apprenticeship. As he matured, he gained clarity on his strengths and values. Attending night school, he earned an MBA in Business Administration and Management from Manchester University, followed by a Master of Science in Project Management from St. John University at York. His career advanced from Project Engineer to Project Manager and Lead, and he achieved chartership as a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Manager, and Chartered Project Manager. This study and work combination enabled him to grow personally aswell starting and nurturing his young family.

In his current role as Framework Director, Thomas oversees a vital program of works at this key UK nuclear facility. He is a passionate advocate for apprenticeships, not only within the local community but nationwide, inspiring the younger generation to consider careers in the engineering construction industry. “The aging workforce and the development of a significant skills gap will directly impact construction project delivery. We must work collectively to bring young people into apprentice programs where they can gain the skills to build the projects of tomorrow,” Thomas explains.

Thomas highlights the growth and evolution that apprenticeship enables for many young people. It offers a robust foundation for further development and career progression.
