Tailored training solutions: Wright Engineering and the ECITB

The ECITB’s Labour Forecasting Tool predicts a growing demand for thousands of skilled workers in the coming years to support critical projects like decarbonisation and hydrogen initiatives. ECIA members, including Wright Engineering, are acutely aware of the industry-wide skills shortage, compounded by a lack of new entrants. In response, the focus has been on upskilling the current workforce and nurturing young talent through apprenticeship schemes.

We have approached Chris Boden-Hook, Managing Director of Wright Engineering, who exemplifies this proactive approach. “Our company has established a comprehensive apprenticeship program and in-house training for key roles, including welders, pipe fitters and mechanical engineers. These initiatives also extend to mentoring and continuous upskilling of our team. We also engage a longstanding partner, the ECITB, for their existing training programs. However, working closely with their Relationship Manager, we identified gaps in specialised areas of fabrication, rigging and pipe fitting. The ECITB collaboratively developed new training standards, which led to training providers generating tailored courses to cover these niche topics”, explains Chris.

These courses ensure that their workforce remains adaptable and expertly skilled for the challenges ahead.

Wright Engineering’s partnership with the ECITB underscores the importance of collaboration in tackling the industry’s skills shortage. By engaging with the ECITB, other ECIA members can similarly enhance their workforce, paving the way for sustainable growth and success.
