Female apprentice at Eastgate Engineering

The engineering construction industry faces a significant challenge with its predominantly male workforce and the dwindling interest from young people. Eastgate Engineering stands out by proudly employing Aimee Arnell as an Instrumentation Apprentice. Inspired by her father, an electrical supervisor for over a decade, Aimee chose to follow in her father’s footsteps. Parental influence played a key role in her career choice, but she believes companies should actively engage with young people through open days and apprenticeship events to raise awareness and attract the next generation of workers.

Aimee is the only female apprentice at Dogger Bank wind farm, and she feels supported by Eastgate Engineering to pursue her apprenticeship without limitations or prejudices. This support allows her to thrive and form friendships. “When people hear that I’m an Instrumentation Apprentice, I often get funny looks or even the odd giggle. Being a girl in a male-dominated industry at such a young age has made me realize how much work is needed to ensure girls have the same opportunities as boys,” Aimee explains.

She believes that companies should onboard apprentices because they can help shape young people into skilled tradespersons who align with the company’s values and principles. Companies can also benefit from the diverse skills apprentices bring, such as expertise in AI and digital media.

“I hope to see the industry become more inclusive and develop ways to help girls like me become less of an anomaly in the workplace,” Aimee adds.

“There are many apprenticeship opportunities, and I would tell anyone considering becoming an apprentice to stop thinking about it and just do it!”
