John Simpson, ECIA Managing Director, is continuing his Customer Intimacy journey travelling around the UK NAECI sites with his next stop being Stanlow refinery. It is the second-largest refinery in the UK with a capacity of almost 300,000 barrels per day. It has been owned by Essar Energy since 2011 and it is a NAECI Category 2 Repair and Maintenance site since 2003. The refinery is planning to reduce carbon emissions by 93% by 2030 via carbon capture and switching from natural gas and other refinery fuel sources to hydrogen as a fuel. Additionally, the refinery plans to invest in infrastructure and extra capacity to increase its national footprint. Currently, EET Fuels is building Europe’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant, which is scheduled for completion in 2027 and planned to be operational by 2028 or 2029.
Stanlow refinery is a principal regional employer with over 900 staff and an additional 800 on-site contractors and John was pleased to engage in discussion with some of the ECIA member contractors on this site. He has also met with EET Fuels representatives to discuss the ongoing relationship between them and the ECIA contractors as well as the National Agreement.
John explains: “Thanks to this journey I am forming a better understanding of the focus areas the ECIA members as well as the site owner would like us to try and improve. It is very reassuring to know that the NAECI is a robust option for managing large energy projects such as the one at Stanlow as it provides an effective framework for efficient and stable project delivery.”
